Lampstand: What Is It?

Lampstand communication is an ancient way of sending messages using a lamp, candle, or similar light placed on a stand. Long before radios or telephones existed, people relied on such signals to convey information across vast distances.

By adjusting the position, brightness, or movement of the lamp, different letters, words, or signals could be represented. Both sender and receiver had to understand the system for the message to make sense. This method was often used for navigation and military purposes—such as sending signals between outposts or ships—but it could also be used for general communication between groups.

From Ancient Practice to Spiritual Symbol

Today, lampstand communication is considered outdated, replaced by modern technology. Yet, it still carries symbolic and spiritual meaning. In reenactments, teaching, or performances, it serves as a reminder of how people once connected.

Spiritually, the lampstand has long represented something greater—the presence of God in religious traditions, for example. Just as a lamp needs oil to keep burning, communication requires ongoing effort. Clear updates, honest feedback, and open dialogue keep relationships alive and meaningful.

A Model for Modern Communication

Lampstand communication also reminds us that how we communicate reflects our values. Transparency, respect, and honesty build trust within communities, organizations, and teams.

  • In organizations: Lampstand-style communication means keeping everyone informed of goals, changes, and expectations—strengthening teamwork and cooperation.
  • In religious settings: It can be a way of sharing teachings that connect with people’s daily lives while encouraging open discussions about faith.
  • In education: Teachers can apply these principles to create classrooms where students feel safe to ask questions and share ideas.

Why It Still Matters

Though no longer used for practical signaling, lampstand communication remains a powerful metaphor. It challenges us to keep our “lamps” burning—cultivating clarity, honesty, and connection—so communities can thrive and important messages are never lost in the dark.

History of Lampstand Communication

Lampstand Communication was founded in 1997 in Australia.

What began as a small endeavour has grown into a ministry, publisher & bookshop, with a specific vision to preserve and share Christian writings—especially from the Latter Rain tradition on onwards—that many modern readers find hard to access or find.

Operating from Mildura, Australia. Lampstand has for decades served a global online community via its bookshop, blog, and periodic free Kindle/book-giveaway offerings for readers of Christian and spiritual heritage materials.

Key milestones include:

  • Late 1990s: Founding (1997) as an online platform focused on Christian publishing and outreach.
  • 2000s-2010s: Expansion of the catalog, publishing & distributing Christian PDF books, especially those less commonly found in mainstream Christian bookstores—many drawn from historical movements or authors.
  • Recent years: Maintaining a blog with historical and theological content (e.g. the writings on the 1948 Latter Rain Movement, George Hawtin, Bill Britton, etc.).

Also more recently — discontinuation of distributing free PDF versions of certain writings, due to changes in software/tools and security/stamping issues.

Throughout, Lampstand has held to a mission of “bringing back timeless Christian books that have long vanished from bookstore shelves.” That sense of preserving spiritual heritage is central.
