Spiritual Drought Excerpt: Although there is no universally accepted definition of drought, since it depends on the usual circumstances of each place, we can understand it as, “a transitory anomaly in a period of time when the amount of water available falls below the requirements to sustain life in that area. The water isn’t sufficient to support the needs of the plants, animals, and humans” (Wikipedia). When the demand for water is greater than the quantity available, it’s called a shortage. Drought causes problems in the development of crops, as well as disease in plants. Moving to the spiritual plane, we can define drought as “a transitory period in which the level of God’s blessings poured out on his people falls below the level of need,” Which causes discouragement, lack of spiritual development, and disease, both physical and spiritual. If we understand that water means life, and where there is no water it is very difficult for any living organism to survive, and if we also understand that water is a symbol of the Spirit, the one who brings life, then we can conclude that a spiritual need which is not met, or a lack of adequate spiritual communion with God and our brothers, will cause spiritual drought in our lives. Life comes from God, and the Spirit that we need is the Spirit of God. Blessings come from God, and our bad relationship with Him is what causes spiritual and material drought in our lives. Drought ends when water comes, and for a long-time the church has been crying out to God, “send the rain, blessings, bring your Glory,” etc. But we are only waiting passively for God to hear us and we are not doing anything to understand that if blessings haven’t arrived it’s not because God doesn’t keep his promises. It’s because we have created obstacles that block the blessings, and because of our failures, laziness, idleness, negligence, iniquities, rebellions, and sins, we have stopped the blessing from coming to us. (Isaiah. 59:2)
It’s time to stop being spiritual babies and reach the next step: obedient children, children of the covenant. It’s time to o have our spiritual bar mitzvah take responsibility before our father and our brothers stop thinking that the world revolves around us, that everything belongs to us, and that everyone else is here to serve us, given to us, and be used by us. In this study we will see the biblical reasons for drought, so that we will be able to apply them to our own lives, see if any of them exists in us, and confess, repent, humble ourselves and be converted so that the rain of blessings can fall on us. Now we will study the probable causes of drought, both economic and spiritual.
